Whether or not you consider yourself to be a wine expert, you’ll almost certainly have heard of Bordeaux and its famous wines. But there are so many hand crafted wines from the region on the shelves these days it can be hard to know what to buy. If you want to experience the great range of tastes but don’t know where to start, help is at hand from Sarah Jane Evans.

The featured wines, all priced between £4.99 and £15.00, are medal winning wines from this year’s 2009 Decanter World Wine Awards.

Sarah Jane Evans MW is one of the UK’s best known wine writers and broadcasters. She has a longstanding interest in the pleasures of matching wine and food, from her ten years as BBC Good Food magazine’s Associate Editor. Today she’s Wine Editor for BBC Good Food and olive, as well as writing widely for consumer publications ranging from Decanter to M&S magazine, and the Hugh Johnson Pocket Wine Book. She travels widely visiting vineyards and producers and is in demand as a judge at wine shows worldwide, including Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, and Georgia (former USSR), as well as the UK.

Her interest in fine flavours extends beyond food and wine. She is a founder member of the Academy of Chocolate and is just finishing a book on Chocolate. She’s also written a book on tea and coffee, and is an expert on cheeses. She gives regular tastings to consumers and private clients. While she has gained the highest qualification in wine – the Master of Wine – she specializes in demystifying wine-tasting and explaining its pleasures. She particularly enjoys telling the stories behind the label, the people and the places involved.
